WE ARE THE 1%: A YEAR OF 1% FOR THE PLANET.
A round-up of our activities with our 1% for the Planet partners this year.
Café du Cycliste is a proud member of 1% for the Planet, which means we give 1% of our annual revenue to charities and organisations that protect the environment or educate in matters of sustainability. Co-founded by Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard in 2002, the mission to protect the planet’s resources and improve corporate responsibility is only growing more vital.
It’s a way for us to give back to and protect the landscapes we love. Each year, we pick partner organisations that work in the mountains, oceans and in sport (for a full list of partners, click here.) But it’s not just financial support: we’ve also been active through the year.
In May, we hosted the Destination UTCAM conference, giving the Trail Runner Foundation, a 1% partner, a platform to present its eco-friendly vision of trail running. We followed this up in July by supporting Trail Runner Foundation with a stand at the event itself.
In June, as part of the third UN Ocean Conference that was taking place in Nice, we welcomed our partner Wings of the Ocean on its plastic-cleaning ship, The Kraken, to Nice port. Wings of the Ocean cleans up our seas, collecting plastics from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, as well as researching marine biodiversity and raising awareness among the general population of the fragile ecosystems off our coasts. Since 2018, it has retrieved over 150 tons of waste from our waters. At our store on the port we hosted “Une Océan sans plastique”, a round-table event driven by Wings of the Ocean.
In September, in partnership with Trail Runner Foundation and with the help of Nice Plogging, we organised a plogging evening along the Nice seafront. Plogging combines jogging or walking with picking up litter, originating in Sweden, but which is now cleaning up landscapes worldwide!
In October, we hosted a gravel ride with Protect Our Winters Germany at the Schicke Mütze bike shop in Dusseldorf, as part of POW’s Mobility Month, promoting active travel. POW raises awareness and shares knowledge through climate education, political advocacy and collaborative initiatives within the outdoor community. We're proud of the work our partners do, and can't wait to get stuck in again next year!
