Mont Chauve, Nice’s ‘bald mountain’, is one of the best viewpoints the city has to offer. And as a dead-end road, it’s a great option for a quiet cycling climb close to base.

Exit town via the Boulevard de Cimiez, lined by Belle Époque architecture and continue north until you reach the signs pointing right for Falicon, one of the region’s countless PERCHED VILLAGES. Just before Falicon turn left at the mini-roundabout to join the climb.

The switchbacks are laid across the crevice of the mountain at a steady 7% gradient. The back and forth approach allows for a different view with every 180-degree turn. What’s important is to continue past the barrier that comes after 5kms – the final set of switchbacks to the fort at the top are narrow, rougher and completely empty and offer a unique riding experience.

Time your climb for sunset or sunrise to get the best views as far as Italy to the east and Cannes to the west, then descend for a post-ride refreshment beside the sea.
