With 55 wins in 1976, Freddy Maertens established a record that most probably will never be beaten. He was a strong rouleur and an incredible sprinter which resulted in numerous wins in the classic races. He also established a record of winning eight stages in one Tour de France, seven on one Giro, thirteen on one Vuelta and six in a row on the 1975 Dauphiné Libéré. He started his career as a fierce opponent of Eddy Merckx and raced professionally until 1987. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest Belgian cyclists.
